RUD developed its DISC chains in response to the increasing complexity and expense of alloy rims. Although the reality is that properly fitted budget chains, Easy2Go or "Classic automatic" chains are unlikely to damage the majority of alloy wheel rims, properly fitted DISC chains ensure that damage just isn't possible. The pictures on this page show the plastic discs which entirely cover the alloy edge of the wheel rim.
- The 'automatic' element is that there is no need to join any steel hoop together, no need to grovel around in the snow at ground level while you push a standard chain around the back of the wheel. You just push DISC chains over the top of the wheel, drive forward a quarter turn so the tensioning chain and behind-the-wheel pulley system is visible, and then pull the tensioning chain tight before wrapping it out of the way.
- Two interlocking plastic rings protect the wheel rim from damage.
- The outer supporting ring holds the outer spring steel hoop away from the alloy rim
- The inner ring holds the tensioning chain away from the alloy rim
- ‘Cross grip’ links – the chains are slower to make, but much stronger
- Wedge shaped chrome-manganese fine-grained alloy steel chain – for better grip
- They have a reversible chain mesh for a long lifetime (but don't grind them down on the tarmac!)
